In 2007, after spending six months in Vietnam, the kids I were going home to the States. We had already purchased tickets from Shanghai to Vancouver, B.C., but we had to get from Hanoi to Shanghai, via Shenzhen in the next two weeks. The summer before Tommy had come to stay with us for ten days for an exchange program and now we would be visiting his family in Shenzhen (north of Hong Kong). The logistics of getting there by the time our flights left Shanghai were still escaping, even as we had packed and were staying in our favorite hotel in Hanoi.
